More than 200 people filled the Victorian Trades Hall council chamber on April 26 to celebrate the life of Frans Timmerman, a lifelong socialist and political and labour movement activist, who was committed to championing the rights of oppressed nations and in building a free and vibrant radical press in the pre-digital era.
Frans Willem Timmerman was born in Djakarta. His father was Dutch-Indonesian and his mother Dutch. The family migrated to Australia in 1950. Frans, the eldest of four sons, attended Dapto High School and gained a BSc (major in mathematics) from the University of NSW
