Housing commission transfer overwhelms tenants

Questions are emerging about whether the rights of residents are getting trampled over in the rush to push through the transfer of old housing commission properties to the “community housing sector”. The sector is made up of non-government organisations set up to provide subsidised affordable housing but in one Sydney suburb, tenants are claiming they’re being intimidated and threatened with eviction if they don’t sign up to new leases that they neither want nor understand.

HEATHER EWART, PRESENTER: Around Australia state governments are offloading thousands of public housing homes. In what must rank as one of the nations’ biggest residential property transactions.

In NSW, as in other states old Housing Commission properties are being transferred to the community housing sector, which is made up of non-government organisations set up to provide subsidised, affordable housing.
